Born on October 26, 1952, Ashwani Kumar is an Indian politician, a former Union Minister, a former attorney-general of India, and a Rajya Sabha member as of 2021. Kumar completed his education at St. Stephen’s College, the University of Delhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was conferred with an honorary doctorate in law from Punjab University. In 1991, he became the youngest Additional Solicitor General of India. He became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 2002 representing Punjab. Between 2012 and 2013, Kumar served as the Union Minister of Law and Justice. Between 2011 and 2013, he also served as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Planning, Minister of State in the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Minister of the State in the Ministry of Earth Sciences. Between January 2011 and July 2011, he served as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs. In 2013, he was part of the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Special Envoy to Japan. He has also authored three books.
